Common Dog Names
Common Dog Names; Past & Present
There are certain pet names that over the years, due to their wild popularity, have come to be known as the most common dog names.
A dog with spots would cleverly be referred to as Spot. Rover was a name commonly used for hunting and herding dogs, roving the fields. And let's not overlook Max, Sparkey, Lady, Toby, Duke, Mandy and Rex. These have become the most iconic names for dogs.
Fido is another classic. This name speaks more to the nature of dogs and their reputation as man's best friend. This name is taken from the Latin word fidelis, which means faithful. So this name was originally used as a reference to the remarkable faithfulness a dog shows to its master. While Fido may seem overused and clichd to many, it is actually a great compliment to your pooch to be given this name.
And of course, fans of hit sitcoms like Family Ties and Spin City and a host of other shows might remember the name Ubu. This was the name of the UBU Productions, Inc. mascot., who happened to be the pet pooch of the company's founder. Since 1982, the name has become more and more popular as people would hear Sit Ubu! Sit! Good dog! along with a picture of a Black Labrador Retriever holding a Frisbee in its mouth after many sitcoms.
Other very common names over the years include Sadie, Daisy, Ginger and Patches. Today, however, there are some new names that are sneaking into the puppy spotlight. Check just about anyone's list, including Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) and companies that create various lines of doggy products, and certain names are bound to pop up more than once. Common male dog names like Max, Jake and Buddy are present at the tops of those lists pretty regularly these days. Common female dog names like Molly and Maggie see their fair share of the pooch pie chart, too. One of them may even turn out to be the new Fido.
