Fame is not just for athletes, movie stars and musicians. It stretches beyond groundbreaking scientists and philosophers. In some cases, fame falls on the shoulders of courageous canines, for these are the only icons who are not looked down upon for drinking out of the toilet. These pooches have become so recognizable and noteworthy that they are considered by pet owners across the world as possible namesakes for their own dogs.
For example, Lassie, the most famous Collie in history. This Hollywood hound was known for protecting her best friend and owner, Timmy, who seemed to fall down wells with unbelievable frequency. But Lassie never failed to let the whole town know what had befallen her young master.
This celebrity dog was known for fending off robbers, saving people from fires, and undying loyalty to her owner and his family. Lassie is a famous dog name that has always been associated with Collies, but because of the noble characteristics associated with it, has been used on other breeds as well. The name has even been given to male dogs, since despite being a female character on the screen, the role was predominantly played by male dogs for the past 50 years.
That cool and collected Collie does not stand alone at the top of the Hollywood pooch mountain, however. Benji was a loveable little mutt who made film appearances from 1974 to 2004. Benji was small in stature but a giant when it came to heart and courage, saving people and other animals everywhere he went, and bringing the fun while doing so. The name Benji has become quite popular among owners of small mixed-breed pups with friendly personalities.
But that's not all we have for furry film stars. Venturing into the land of animation, the most famous cartoon canine to closely resemble a scaredy-cat is without a doubt, Scooby-Doo. Scooby is a perpetually nervous dog who, with the help of his human friends, always seem to find rational explanations behind the appearances of ghosts. Despite most of these creatures turning out to be crotchety old men, the next ghost never fails to scare the coat off this goofy Great Dane. Scooby-Doo is a name worthy of any dog that is loyal, loves to eat, and is maybe a little excitable and clumsy at times. And don't forget his little fearless pint-sized nephew, Scrappy-Doo.
Some other inspirations for famous puppy names over the years include Buck from Jack London's classic The Call of the Wild ; Beethoven , in honor of the loveable yet mischievous St. Bernard from the silver screen; and of course, the most famous of all German Shepherds, the poised police dog Rin Tin Tin, K-9 Cop.
