Naming A Big Dog

Running With The Big Dogs

So you’ve got a big dog? An imposing physical specimen. A sight to behold. Well to run with the big dogs, you have to have a big dog name. One that says your dog is more than meets the eye. And he can turn into a car and roll out with the Autobots, battling the Decepticons … or … something along those lines. There are a lot of different types of big dog names to choose from, and not just from cartoons from the 1980s, though who wouldn‘t want to be named after a Thundercat? Well, maybe a canine or two, but a cool name can turn a big dog into the top dog.

For starters, there are your common large dog names. These are monikers that reference sheer size and strength. Names like Hulk, Goliath, Bull and Brutus come to mind. These are names that sound tough and fitting for a large dog. But pet owners over the years have learned that there is more to choosing a name than that.

Today, many dog lovers will look for names that are more specific to their pet. If their dog is rippling with muscles, they may decide on Muscles or Flex for a name. If the furry guy is a little pudgy, you might go in a different direction. This could lead to Pudge, Albert (as in Fat Albert), Chubbs or Whopper.

There is an endless supply of popular large dog names. True dog lovers tend to lean toward a name that carries more than just a description of size. They want something that fits both the stature as well as other characteristics of their pup. Maybe the size of ears or paws. A bid dog with a big mouth could be Jaws, Yappers, Goober or Chompers.

A dog may be impressive in size but have a timid personality. After all, you can’t judge a book by its cover.. A dog like this might get a name somewhere along the lines of Lurch, rather than a more aggressive sounding name such as Gladiator, Lionel or Goliath . And not every big dog comes with a big bark. Some larger pets can have a comically high-pitched bark, making them sound more like Peter Brady struggling to enter manhood while everyone focuses on Marcia, Marcia, Marcia! Maybe Brady or Screech would be appropriate for a pooch like this.

There is a lot to be said for the humor of a big dog. They are generally sweet, mild mannered and cuddly, often believing themselves to be well suited for your lap. Some cuddly, sweet names include Snuffy (Mr. Suffalupagus), Bear or Shadow. Names like Peanut, PeeWee and Tiny are always humorous when it comes to the really big dogs.

Either way, today’s dog aficionados still have all the standard big dog names at their disposal. But more and more, names that touch on size and personality are winning the day.
